There has been a crossing of the river locally, at Knots Ford (Knotford Nook) and possibly also at Pool itself since before the Doomsday Book. The current bridge dates from 1754, although it was widened to its present size in 1815.
Daubenton’s bats roost under the bridge, and these can be seen foraging over the river in summer. They are small bats that rarely leave a zone a couple of hand spans wide above the water. Other bats include pipistrelles, and some larger, higher-flying, noctules.
You can read about bats on the Bat Conservation Trust website http://www.bats.org.uk/pages/contents_page.html
Nestling up to the bridge on the far bank you can catch sight of the base station for a level monitor. You can see what water level it is currently reading on the Environment Agency website
